Grazing and Turnout

Fence upgrade

In 2020 we started the process of removing all barbed wire and replacing it with stock fencing and electric. Pictures of the new fencing. This will be an ongoing task which we hope to have completed by the end of 2024.

Summer turnout

Summer turnout is unrestricted (24hr) during the summer months while the land can support it. Towards the end of the summer the management will make the decision when to move to winter turnout.

Winter turnout

Turnout during the winter is restricted to day turnout only, horses must be off the field no later than 8:00pm and cannot be turned out before 6:00am. Horses are not allowed to be left out 24hr, this restriction is lifted at the end of the winter (usually between April - May) when the management feel the land can support it.

Land management

Grazing is rotated between a number of fields during the summer and winter. The fields are fertilized and sprayed with a weed killer as part of the land management protocol.

Sheep grazing (It's good for you)

Sheep are happy to eat the long grass and the broad leaf plant that horses will not, another benefit of keeping sheep is worms that infest horses do not survive in sheep. Keeping sheep has helped reduce the need to treat the fields for weeds and reduce the worm count in the horses.

Worming

Horses must be wormed on a regular bases to keep them free from serious worm infestation. Worming is not organized by the management, livery owners currently organize this between them selves. You must not fail to worm your horse, no exceptions unless the management agree.

Exceptional conditions (weather or other issues that effect grazing)

Our aim is to allow horses to have access to grazing 365 days of the year. However on occasion we may have to limit or withdraw grazing due to unusual weather (winter rain 2013) or conditions. We do not make any guarantee that your horse will have access to grazing 365 days of the year.
